Description
“What Lies Beneath”, inspired and base on an oil painting by Kahlil Gibran entitled “Le Remords” (Remorse).40x30cm oil on canvas palette knife and brush. 21 July 2024.
As in “Seeing Differently”, I paused to see if there was anything else which spoke to me in the picture – any shapes – and yes, looking closer beneath the earth where the women feature, I saw “what lies beneath”. Clearly a representation of which lies beneath the surface of my own being. Although there is an air of abandon, freedom and relaxation in the supine figure, and there is, what I interpret as sadness, despondency and alienation in the second crouching figure, both have aspects of their being which lie beneath the surface, to deal with process and release. The figures in the deep are dark and hidden, as is our “yin” nature, and we need to carve or dig deep within our being to confront those energies which need acknowledgement, expression and release. As I painted using mostly palette knife, an “angel appeared” asking to be included. This is the first oil painting where I am chancing nudes! Reasonably content with the results.
