Description
“Seeing Differently” oil on canvas 40x30cm palette knife and brush. Loosely based on one of Kahlil Gibran’s oil paintings. When tuning into what my next painting would be, and drawn to the blues and hues of what I discovered were unknown (to me) works or Gibran, I began by fixing one of his photos to my guide board, and masking out the nude bather. As the picture was at that moment on a vertical plain, as I looked at it, an obvious shape jumped out at me. It is entitled appropriately, as a sublime message for me (and anyone else who wishes to also) to “see differently” things, situations and life in general. Turning adversity to advantage, turning the world from horizontal view to vertical view, from earth to sky and simultaneously connected to earth. Also the abstract quality of the painting, palette knife, and especially the unusual shape reminds me of my dear Mama’s abstract and very defined and delineated shapes in some of her paintings. Gibran is universally known for his work – “The Prophet”, translated in to many languages. In one of my editions of this book, I saw that he was also an artist as the book contained some of his drawings. Curious, I wondered what other art work Gibran had produced. I came across numerous, drawings – portraits, and many eclectic oil paintings. This is a wonderful article for those passionate about his work or art.
Inspired to take up the pencil! I was told many times by professional and proficient artists, that before you can paint you must learn to draw! I had drawn quite a bit in the late 1980s and then moved onto water colour then oil painting. I am learning, through copying some of my late Mama’s amazing drawings which she drew very early on in her younger days, in order to develop more focus, concentration, attention to detail and work on aspects of shading and likeness.
